thank you, ensemble39!!

The ensemble39 concert last Saturday at AxD was simply wonderful.  The turnout was terrific and the music was ever better.  Larry Wood’s metal work not only provided unique settings for chamber music, but the metal and fabric behind many of the pieces potentially added to the acoustics in the space. The ensemble’s performance of “Different Trains” by Steve Reich was the highlight of the evening.  That piece requires precision timing between the live instrumentation and the prerecorded sound sampling of Reich’s voice.   The ensemble’s execution was flawless.

ensemble39 has upcoming shows in NYC and on the mainstage at World Cafe Live.  Please visit their website for further updates.

Stripworks is up at AxD gallery – preview images

StripWorks – Larry Wood

opens with reception this First Friday, December 2nd from 6pm to 9pm.

Here are some images of the new installation at the gallery; fifteen of Larry Wood’s newest patina and abrasion drawings of the human form on stainless steel.  Lighting these eerily lifelike images was a challenge.  Photographing these works on metal has proven even tougher.

Here are few preview images of StripsWorks.  Sadly, these images do not do the work proper justice.  To see this unique show with your eyes come to AxD on First Friday, December 2nd.

"Strip 017", patinated stainless steel sheet - 18" x 72"

Black fabric, separate from the works, were installed to absorb light bouncing off the opposite walls and to minimize light reflecting off each darkened steel sheet.

"Strip 023", patinated steel sheet with bronze background - 14" x 97"

Detail of "Strip 023"

There are a few more female images than male in StripWorks.

Detail of "Strip 014", patinated stainless steel sheet - 12" x 72"

"Strip 021", patinated stainless steel sheet - 24" x 48"

StripWorks – Larry Wood continues through December 31st at AxD Gallery.

Sneak peak at AxD’s upcoming exhibition, StripWorks – Larry Wood

Here is a quick look at AxD Gallery’s next exhibition, StripWorks.

Artist Larry Wood presents a unique form of figure drawing at this December.  Narrow strips of steel are turned into monochromatic imagery depicting the male and female form.  An architectural metals fabricator by trade, Wood has married his professional expertise with prior classical training in drawing.  Wood has developed a way to draw nuances of curve, shadow and line of the human torso on six and eight foot steel sheets without the use of cameras, brushes, inks or pigments.  The imagery is hand-etched into the metal sheets using chemicals and abrasives.  The reflective nature of the metal sheets on which they are made gives each image an eerie living quality from the surrounding light reflecting off the art as the viewer moves past.  They are light recorded by hand.

StripWorks opens with reception First Friday, December 2nd, and continues through the 31st.

Annette Cords – Turnarounds extended!

Annette Cords – Turnarounds at AxD Gallery will now run through Saturday, November 12th.

Cords' expert grasp of contrast does make her work a challenge to photograph. The reds and cyans in the painting on the right are as intense as this image shows.
